Shubman Gill’s debut as Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper has not been easy at all so far, as the Indian star is not only struggling as the skipper but as a batter as well in the ongoing IPL 2024. Gill lost his 7th match of the ongoing IPL season, and only a miracle can help the Gujarat Titans (GT) qualify for the playoffs.

Gill is visibly facing challenges in his new role as captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT), but his senior teammate David Miller showed support for his young skipper. GT tasted great success in the previous two seasons, as they were crowned champions in 2022 and were runners-up last year under the leadership of Hardik Pandya.

But the Titans are currently languishing in ninth place in the IPL 2024 points table with only 8 points from 11 games in the tournament so far. However, Miller believes that Gill is gradually adapting to the responsibilities of captaincy, and the experience will make him a good leader.

Shubman is an exceptional player, but...." David Miller

The Proteas star’s comments came after GT suffered an embarrassing defeat of four wickets against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 52nd match of the ongoing IPL 2024 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 4. With this win, RCB jumped to the 7th spot in the standings, while GT slipped to the 9th spot in the points table.

David Miller said at the post-match press conference: “Shubman is an exceptional player, as we all know. He is still young and has a lot to learn, but I feel like his leadership has been really really good. I feel he is adjusting really well to the captaincy. I think it’s a tough one too because the margins are so small. There are certain games that we potentially should have won but ended up losing. We would have been in a better position if we had won those.”

GT conceded 92 runs during the Power Play phase of the IPL 2024 clash against RCB while defending a modest total of 148 runs in Bengaluru, and Miller said that it proved to be a crucial factor, significantly shifting the momentum of the match in favor of the home team.

He added, “We lost the game in the powerplay. We were a couple of wickets down while batting and conceded 90 runs while bowling. So, it was tough. You’re not going to win too many games like that.”

Speaking about the positives from the RCB vs GT game, Miller highlighted the team's resilience and fighting spirit. He lauded GT’s ability to bounce back despite RCB's strong performance in the powerplay. However, Miller admitted the need for improvement in the team's length.

In the end, Miller said that the senior pacer Mohammed Shami was exceptional in the power play for GT in the past seasons, so the team is missing their premier bowler in the power play this season. He also highlighted Shami’s ability to take wickets and keep the economy rate down in the powerplay.
