With two crucial fast bowlers ruled out of the opening Test at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand has been dealt a severe setback ahead of their Test series against England.

Kyle Jamieson, a seasoned right-arm pacer, will miss both of the Tests against England due to a recurrence of his nagging back problem. Matt Henry, another pacer, will miss the first Test of the series, which begins on Thursday since he is expecting his first child.

Jacob Duffy And Scott Kuggelejin Added To New Zealand Squad

Uncapped players Jacob Duffy and Scott Kuggeleijn were late additions to the Black Caps team and, should they be chosen, might make their Test debut at Bay Oval.

The biggest blow to the Kiwis will be Jamieson’s absence; the 28-year-old was expected to recover from a back injury sustained during New Zealand’s Test tour of England in June in time for this series. Jamieson recently made a successful comeback to New Zealand’s domestic cricket, but an MRI examination of the injured region revealed what seemed to be a back stress fracture.

“It’s really gutting for Kyle to have this happen after he’d put so much hard work in to getting himself back on the park,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

“Since the injury in June we’ve certainly taken a cautious approach to managing his return with regular monitoring by our medical staff which has included scans.

“While Kyle’s not feeling any pain, the evidence is pretty clear he has a stress-fracture and so he’ll return to Christchurch today and have a CT scan on Friday before we decide on the next steps.”

Prior to the February 24 commencement of the second Test of the series in Wellington, Henry is anticipated to rejoin the New Zealand team.
