James Anderson and Stuart Broad have surpassed Australia’s Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne’s 1,001 wicket total to emerge as the most successful bowling combination in Test cricket.

On the third day of the first Test between England and New Zealand at Mount Maunganui, Broad bowled Devon Conway, putting him and Anderson on 1,002 wickets overall from 133 Test matches.

It quickly increased to 1,004 as Broad continued his outstanding performance under the lights by dismissing Tom Latham (15), Kane Williamson (0), and Tom Blundell.

The combined total of Anderson and Broad was 997 before the game, but after sharing four wickets in the first inning for the Black Caps, they have already surpassed McGrath and the late Warne’s record from their 104 outings together.

Most Test Wickets As Teammates

1002* – James Anderson and Stuart Broad (ongoing)
1001 – Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath
895 – Muttiah Muralidaran and Chaminda Vaas
762 – Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose

The first time James Anderson and Stuart Broad played together was in a Test in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2008. It was the second game of a three-match series that England won 2-1.

After levelling the series with a 126-run victory in the second Test — with Anderson’s first-innings five-for, England went on to win the third Test in Napier by 121 runs.

With five draws and two innings losses in their last seven games, England’s triumph in Napier remains their most recent in Test matches played in New Zealand.

They are, however, the favourites to prevail in this week’s game at Bay Oval against New Zealand, who is attempting to break their previous record for successful run chasing (394).
