Indian captain Rohit Sharma has voiced his opinion against the Indian Premier League's Impact substitution rule which came into effect since the IPL 2023.

The rule allows teams to use 12 instead of 11 players in a match and it has given teams an extra dimension with their combinations. The Impact player rule was first used by the BCCI in the domestic circuit through the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022.

The new change was well suited and teams had benefitted from it as well therefore the apex board thought of implementing it in the Indian Premier League from the 2023 season onwards.

How does the Impact player rule work?

The substitution can exercised anytime after the 14th over of the 1st innings of a match with teams choosing from a total of 5 players, which have to be named below their playing XIs.

It was a bit confusing in the first season as teams and fans were new to it but as the season proceeded, all the teams figured out the best way out of this ruling.

However, in its second season of implementation, the Impact player rule is being highly questioned and calls are being made to abolish this ruling.

Fans and cricket experts are demanding the 11 V 11 match-up in the IPL and while no other current player has gone against it, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has become the first player to come forward and describe its negative impact.

Rohit himself was used as an Impact player a couple of times last season but after seeing more of it this year, his opinion has become strong.

What did Rohit Sharma say about the Impact-sub ruling?

Rohit Sharma had recently taken some time out of his busy schedule to virtually join the famous Club Prairie Fire podcast along with Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist among others.

Therein, he was asked to give opinions about a lot of subjects, from team India's opening combination in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 to his plans for the ongoing IPL edition. He was also asked to shed light on his opinion about the Impact player ruling and certain franchises might not like his answer.

The 36-year-old admitted that he is not a big fan of the Impact player rule or in simple words, he doesn't like the idea itself. Rohit Sharma reasoned that this rule keeps the all-rounders from showcasing their quality and talent.

He named Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar as two players who are not getting the chance to bowl at all and he considers that to be a bad thing. Yet he claimed that it is entertaining because 12 players are getting the chance to play a match.

"I am not a big fan of the impact-sub rule. It is going to hold all-rounders back, guys like Dube & Sundar aren’t getting to bowl which is not a good thing for us - it is entertaining as there are 12 players, giving lots of options." - Rohit said via Club Prairie Fire podcast.
