Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman believes that veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan must be eagerly looking forward to leading his team with both bat as well as captain in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Team India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in a series of 3 ODIs and as many T20Is later this month and in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan will be leading a young team.

Laxman, during a discussion on the Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues’, reckoned that given the manner in which Shikhar Dhawan has performed for the Delhi Capitals in the last 3 years, he must be eager to take more responsibility.

“Shikhar Dhawan, I am sure he will enjoy and relish the leadership role. The way he has performed for the Delhi Capitals in T20 cricket for the last two years, I feel he is eagerly waiting for this tournament both as a captain and as a batsman,” said VVS Laxman.

The former Indian cricketer further added that the additional responsibility of leading the team should have a positive impact on Shikhar Dhawan’s batting.

“Last year also we saw when he got a chance for the Delhi Capitals, when the IPL happened in the UAE, I thought he enjoyed the responsibility. It will benefit his batting as well because someone who enjoys responsibility will take that responsibility into his batting also.” he added.

Meanwhile, former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that Shikhar Dhawan has given amazing service to Indian cricket in the white-ball formats in the past decade.

“Shikhar Dhawan has given amazing service to Indian cricket and especially the influence he has had in the ODI and T20 formats for the Indian team. I feel every player who becomes the Indian captain finds himself on a different pedestal,” said Sanjay Bangar.

Bangar also reckoned that the additional responsibility of leading his country will have a positive impact on Shikhar Dhawan’s batting.

”To motivate the team and to create strategies for the team, I feel he will enjoy this challenge a lot, and the standard of his game will also go up,” he added.
