Win or lose, Kane Williamson had already planned how what he would be doing post the WTC final – changing nappies of his six-month-old daughter. As it turned out, the New Zealand captain met his family as a World Test Champion.

Kane Williamson reveals his special way of celebrating the WTC final win over India involved him being on ‘daddy duties’. He drove solo from Southampton to Taunton, Somerset, in a rental car after conquering the world spend time with his family.

The Black Caps defeated the Asian giants by 8 wickets in the final hour on the sixth day (Reserve Day) at The Ageas Bowl to become the first World Test Champion.

“That was part of the plan. My family was in Somerset. I drove to meet them the next day. I had to do a couple of photoshoots before that and a couple of interviews. Then got in the car and drove to Somerset and started changing nappies. It’s a slightly unique way of celebrating,” Kane Williamson told Cricbuzz.

“We had a really enjoyable night and the rest of the team were flying back to quarantine for two weeks. That’s sort of the world we live in. I know it sounds funny, after such a long period of time, there’s no better place you’d rather be than with family.”

That was a great moment, our relationship is deeper than a game of cricket: Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson talks about his embracing hug with India captain Virat Kohli after the game, as he rested his head on Kohli’s shoulder. Both the captains have developed a close bond after their first meeting in the 2008 under-19 semi-final, where Kohli got the better of the Kiwi skipper. However, Kane Williamson has now defeated Kohli in two consecutive ICC knockout games. Nonetheless, their off-field camaraderie is strong.

“That was a great moment. We knew anytime you play against India, wherever you are, it’s an incredibly tough challenge. They often set the benchmark in our game in all formats. They show that with the depth that they have and cricket in their country as well.

“And the friendship with Virat stems back a number of years and a number of sort of different times. And it was cool … At the end of it, after a long tough match like that, there’s an appreciation by both teams.

“Someone gets the trophy, and a team perhaps doesn’t get the fortune to have that. But we always know that there’s a bigger picture to it all. It was a really nice moment and our friendship and relationship are deeper than a game of cricket. And we both know that,” Williamson further stated.
