Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has criticized England and Pakistan's poor performance in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Chopra said that Pakistan and England have had such a disappointing campaign that even Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, who have struggled in Test cricket, are placed above them in the standings.
Chopra also suggested a big change to the ICC World Test Championship. The cricket pundit believes that the ICC should introduce a promotion and relegation system, where teams have to earn their place in the top division based on their performances in the Test matches. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra has mocked England by saying that their aggressive 'Bazball' style of cricket has entertained fans, but the team has not achieved the kind of results many expected. He pointed out that England have everything, but they have still not reached the World Test Championship final in any of the completed WTC cycles.
Chopra also mentioned that England are currently seventh in the WTC 2025-27 points table. They have managed four wins in 13 Test matches, along with one draw, showing that they have not been consistent enough. Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel, "Whenever I look at England, I honestly feel they only entertain but don't achieve much. This is a country where Test cricket attracts full stadiums. The fans create an atmosphere that makes every Test match feel like the biggest sporting event in the world. But despite all that support, the team hasn't delivered the results.”
The former Indian opener added, “Several World Test Championship cycles have gone by, and England haven't even come close to qualifying for the final in any of them. Right now, England is sitting at No. 7 in the standings. Only the West Indies and Pakistan are below them.”

Speaking about Pakistan's performance, Chopra pointed out that they are currently at the bottom of the WTC 2025-27 standings. The team has won only one of its first five Test matches and has collected just 6 percent of the available WTC points.
The cricket pundit said that Pakistan's performance has been so poor that even getting grace marks would not have helped them improve their position in the ICC World Test Championship. He said Pakistan’s numbers clearly show how badly they have struggled in the current WTC cycle.
He added, “Pakistan's position is also disappointing. Pakistan has managed just 6% of the available World Test Championship points. That's an incredibly poor return. In fact, it's so low that you could say they haven't even managed to scrape through with grace marks.”

Meanwhile, Chopra suggested an interesting idea to improve the competition. He suggested that the World Test Championship should have a promotion and relegation system, just like many football leagues. He said that if there are 12 Test-playing nations, they should be divided into two groups of six teams each.
The top six teams should play in the first division, while the bottom six should compete in the second division. At the end of every WTC cycle, the best teams from the lower division should be promoted, while the worst teams from the top division should be relegated.
He believes this system would make every Test match more important because every team would have to fight to stay in the top division.
Chopra added, “Looking at these results, I feel the World Test Championship should introduce a promotion and relegation system. At the moment, Pakistan would clearly be in the lower division with just 6% of the available points. Those numbers show just how far behind they currently are.”
