Former England National Cricket Team pacer Darren Gough is not very excited about the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the team’s new head coach for the Tests. Gough is curious to see the appointments of the other coaching staff who will help Fleming in his job.
Darren Gough lauded the coaches who have long associations with England’s domestic cricket teams over the years and have proved their potential already. The former cricketer suggested that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appoint coaches from the roots of their domestic cricket ecosystem for the betterment of the nation’s cricket.
Stephen Fleming as England's Test team coach
ECB has appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who was recently sacked by the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as the head coach of the England cricket team for the Test format, replacing Brendon McCullum.
The departure of Stephen Fleming from Chennai Super Kings was unceremonious, as under his leadership, the franchise witnessed massive setbacks in the past few seasons. It is also undeniable that with Fleming as head coach, CSK was at its pinnacle.
Fleming, as Brendon McCullum’s successor, attracted mixed reactions in the cricket fraternity. Darren Gough, however, was not curious about Fleming; his point of interest was the future of England cricket and those English coaches who have been grinding hard for years with the county teams.
Darren Gough wants only English coaches as the helping hands of Stephen Fleming
Speaking on ‘talkSPORT Cricket ’, the former fast bowler, who played for Essex & Yorkshire in county cricket, mentioned that because of the overseas appointment, English coaches are not getting the due opportunities which they deserve. While the ECB showed their trust in foreign coaches, the coaches of England are not getting the chance to prove themselves for the national cricket team.
“I'm not too fussed about the Stephen Fleming appointment; what I will say is I want every other coach in that setup to be English. Because the English coaches are not getting their chance to shine on the world circuit because they're not getting the chance in their own country to coach the national side. So I agree with that. Head coach can be a New Zealander or Australian, but I think every other coach within that setup has got to be English,” Darren Gough said during the conversation.

Peter Moores from Leicester, who guided the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club to capture the number one spot in the County Championship Standings in the previous season, is among the most experienced coaches currently active in England’s domestic cricket. Nottinghamshire is currently leading the points tally in the ongoing Championship as well.
