South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has taken Indian red-ball captain Virat Kohli’s side in the captaincy controversy in Indian cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Rohit Sharma as the new white-ball captain of the Indian team after Virat Kohli stepped from the T20I captaincy because the selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains in the team. Meanwhile, after that, the statement given by Kohli in a press conference on Wednesday contradicted the things the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said earlier regarding the captaincy change.

Since the press conference, Kohli has got a lot of support from fans for standing up for himself and not taking the safer route by agreeing to the things said by the BCCI president. Meanwhile, now the Proteas spinner has shown his support towards the Indian red-ball captain Kohli. The South African spinner quoted a tweet from a fan that read:

“The safer option for Virat would’ve been to side with Ganguly’s version of the story. Clearly, Virat isn’t that kind of a person, on and off the field.”

Quoting the tweet, Tabraiz Shamsi stated:

“This is why he is as good as he is”.

Notably, the BCCI president Ganguly shed light on removing Kohli from the ODI captaincy and said that he personally requested Kohli not to quit the T20I captaincy but he didn’t agree that’s why they decided to remove him from captaincy because they didn’t want to have two white-ball captains. He said:

Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” Ganguly stated.

Meanwhile, Kohli on Wednesday revealed that he was never asked to reconsider his decision. He elaborated:

There was no offense, no hesitation, and not for once was I told that ‘you should not leave T20 captaincy’, On the contrary, the BCCI called it a progressive step and in the right direction. At that time I had communicated that yes, I would like to continue in Tests and ODIs unless office-bearers and selectors think that I shouldn’t carry on with this responsibility.”
