Viacom18 Wins Women’s IPL Media Rights, To Pay 951 Crores For Five Editions

Viacom18 won the Women’s IPL media rights for five years (2023-27) at an auction in Mumbai on Monday. Viacom has contributed Rs 951 crore, which equates to Rs 7.09 crore for each match.

Viacom outbid Disney Star, Sony, and Zee. The Network 18-owned media company also has internet rights to the men’s IPL and the ongoing SA20 League in South Africa.

Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd on January 16 won the Women’s IPL media rights for ₹951 crores, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced.

“Congratulations Viacom18 for winning the Women’s IPL media rights. Thank you for your faith in BCCI and BCCI Women. Viacom has committed INR 951 crores which means per match value of INR 7.09 crores for the next 5 years (2023-27). This is massive for Women’s Cricket,” Shah tweeted.

“After pay equity, today’s bidding for media rights for Women’s IPL marks another historic mandate. It’s a big and decisive step for the empowerment of women’s cricket in India, which will ensure the participation of women of all ages. New dawn indeed!”

The inaugural women’s IPL is expected to have five teams:

The inaugural women’s IPL is expected to include five teams, with 80% coming from the central commercial pool, with media rights accounting for a sizable portion.

The BCCI has selected eleven cities from across India for consideration. Each of the five teams will be assigned to a city.

ESPNcricinfo previously reported that the owners of men’s Indian Premier League franchises Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans had submitted bids for the women’s IPL. The BCCI has set January 23 as the deadline for submitting technical bids for assessment. In comparison to media rights, the rights to own teams would be granted for a ten-year period (2023-32).

On January 25, the five franchises are expected to be revealed. The BCCI currently has sealed envelopes with offers from organizations wishing to own teams.

The first season of the women’s Indian Premier League, which will feature a total of 22 matches, is expected to run from March 5 to 23 (though the exact dates have not yet been announced).
