Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun has expressed some grave concerns for his players amid the current circumstances. Even as the entire world, including athletes, are doing everything they can to stay clear of the virus, there exists growing uncertainty as well. As cricketers, who remain on the field for the most part of the year, the sudden suspension has handed them an uphill challenge.

The last taste of international cricket that the fraternity and fans had was back in March when Australia took on New Zealand. Ever since all the events have come to a grinding halt, forcing people to stay indoors to stay safe and curb the disease spread.

Particularly, in India, the government imposed a lockdown on the 25th of March that is continuing to date with relaxations in between. Understandably, remaining at home may have made the players’ bodies stiff even when they are doing their bit to stay fit.

Bharat Arun echoed the same saying that it can be very frustrating for a professional sportsperson to stay at home and do nothing. Not channelising the energy as desired can be monotonous; however, he understands there is little choice for now. During this time, their team management has evaluated that the cricketers would require a comprehensive training camp of six to eight weeks to be ready for international cricket.

“For a professional sportsperson, to be sitting at home doing nothing can be very frustrating. Not being able to expand that energy is like a curse. It can be boring, can be extremely monotonous. But there’s no choice and therefore it’s a challenge that has to be taken up. The team management has identified that the cricketers will need camp lasting six to eight weeks to conduct this elevated training and optimum skill-based programme before they can walk out to play international cricket.” Bharat Arun said as quoted by Times of India.

Expanding on the topic of remaining fit during such times, the 57-year old said that he keeps encouraging speedster Mohammed Shami and is in regular touch with him. Unlike most cricketers, Shami has been fortunate enough and wise to move into his farm before the lockdown came into effect, having an open space to sprint, bowl, and practice.

Arun continues telling him to keep putting in the hard yards, which would help him to prolong his international career by a year or two. The Bengal pacer reportedly sends videos to his coach regarding his training sessions.

“He keeps sending me videos and I keep talking to him, motivating him “Tu bas aise hi practice karte reh. Tera ek do saal aur career mein add ho jayega (Just keep bowling/practising like this. You’ll add a year or two to your career going forward.” he added.
