Fans React As Chris Gayle Clears Air On His Retirement

West Indies opener Chris Gayle has clarified that he has not retired from ODIs, and continues to be available in the 50-over format “until further notice”. The entire cricketing world thought that Gayle was playing for West Indies for the last time when he came out to bat against India in the third ODI wearing a jersey with the number 301. The number denoted the number of ODIs he played for his team.

And when Indian players gave him a send-off by hugging and congratulating him, it really looked like Gayle retired from ODIs. The way Gayle walked back to the pavilion with his helmet on the bat and his teammates giving him a standing ovation, very few would have thought that the hard-hitting batsman had some other plans.

Following the game, Gayle said that he has not announced his retirement yet. He went on to delay his retirement until further notice.

“I didn’t announce any retirement,” Chris Gayle stated in a short clip posted by West Indies Cricket.

Gayle, nonetheless, made it clear that he still has a lot to offer to cricket. He was at his devastating best in the third ODI. He hit a swashbuckling 41-ball 72 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, much to the delight of the local fans. There was fireworks from the Universe Boss. Gayle’s 72-run knock was studded with five sixes and eight fours. India, nonetheless, went on to win the game with Virat Kohli’s century leading the way.

India won by 6 wickets (DLS method) to win the three-match series 2-0. Batting first, West Indies scored 240 for 7 in 35 overs. India had to chase 255 in 35 overs and they did it inside 33 overs. Kohli remained unbeaten on 114 while Shreyas Iyer scored 65.
