South Africa star Hashim Amla, on Wednesday, added another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest South African to 8,000 ODI runs. The right-handed batsman achieved the milestone in the ongoing World Cup 2019 match against New Zealand in Birmingham. The veteran batsman also became the fourth South Africa to breach the 8,000-run mark in ODIs.

Hashim Amla needed 24 runs before the start of the match to reach the landmark. He had the chance to become the joint-fastest to achieve the feat in South Africa’s last match against Afghanistan but failed to do so as his side was chasing only a modest total of 126. In that game, he had scored an unbeaten 41.

Against New Zealand, he achieved the milestone in the 12th over. Amla got the start but failed to convert it as Mitchell Santner sent him back for 55 in the 28th over. Overall, he is the second fastest to 8,000 ODI runs. India skipper Virat Kohli currently holds the record after achieving the feat in 175 innings, one less than what Amla took to reach the landmark.

Amla is the fastest to complete 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 ODI runs. Amla had surpassed Kohli on the last three occasions when he entered the 5000, 6000 and 7000 clubs but missed out on his latest milestone. On the other hand, Kohli now holds the record for being the fastest to 8000, 9000, 10000 and 11000 runs in the 50-over format. Kohli recently became the fastest to 11,000 ODI runs, breaking Sachin Tendulkar‘s record in the process.
