India thrashed Sri Lanka by 93 runs in the first T20 International in Cuttack on Wednesday to take one nil lead in the three-match series.
Chasing 181, Sri Lanka were looking set to give India a run for their money when they raced away to 39 for 1 in the 5th over. However, their innings completely derailed once Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed the in-form Upul Tharanga. Since the southpaw’s departure, the Islanders kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for a paltry 87. Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball for the hosts, taking 4 for 23.
Earlier, KL Rahul’s half-century and quickfire knocks from MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey had propelled the hosts to a commanding 180 for 3 in the allotted 20 overs. Sent in to bat first, the Men in Blue were off to a steady start with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma adding 38 runs for the first wicket before the latter was sent back by Angelo Mathews for 17. A fifty-plus stand between Rahul and Shreyas Iyer then set the tone for a big score but the visitors fought their way by dismissing both the batsmen in quick succession.
By the time the 15th over ended, the scoreboard was reading a modest 114 for 3. However, the innings got the much-needed impetus when Dhoni and Pandey scored 17 runs in the 17th over. 9 runs came off the following over before the duo blasted 21 off the penultimate over to put India on its way to a good total. Thisara Perera then managed to keep the duo under control on the first five balls before Dhoni finished things in style by sending the final over out of the park. Dhoni and

Just this morning I was reading a newspaper report on how @msdhoni is no longer the old Dhoni, and he comes up with this knock. Struggled hard to think when did 'experts' ever like the 'old' Dhoni? He was always targetted. #INDvSL

"Dhoni finishes it off in style"! Last 5 overs 66 runs. India have a competitive score. Sri Lanka will rue the extra 15 they have conceded

Sri Lanka has some big strikers. India need 170+. Fine half century by Rahul, but threw wicket away when well set

What purpose does Dinesh Karthik serve in the team, if he is not sent in to bat @ 4 or 5? With a limited pinch-hitting prowess, what is he expected to do lower down the order in a T20? #INDvSL @bhogleharsha
