Mumbai Indians began their target defence well removing Shane Watson in the first over. Lasith Maling provided the first breakthrough as always before Suresh Raina miscued a shot off Hardik Pandya to give a lofted catch to Suryakumar Yadav at the point region. While Murali Vijay – playing his first game of season stood tall from one end, Krunal Pandya removed Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav to guide Mumbai Indians on top. Pandya broke the defence of both the batsmen to dismantle their stumps to have Chennai Super Kings at 45 for four.

To make things worse for Chennai Super Kings, debutant Anukul Roy got the better of Dhruv Shorey before Jasprit Bumrah removed the set Murali Vijay as the defending champions were reeling at 66 for six. Since then, Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Santner tried to steer the innings but Mumbai looked like a different team today. Bumrah and Malinga finished off the tail in style to hand Rohit Sharma & Co another thumping win.

Previously, Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis set a good platform for the Mumbai Indians despite losing Quinton de Kock early. The right-hand left-hand combinations troubled the bowlers and played thier shots with ease. Much to Chennai’s bad, they failed to recognise a faint edge off Evin Lewis on the last ball of the powerplays. They added 75 runs for the second wicket before New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner provided a breakthrough. Mumbai were looking to cut loose when Santner got the better of Lewis. Imran Tahir then got the better of Krunal Pandya to help Chennai Super Kings nip back in the game.

Rohit Sharma; however, brought his half-century and shouldered the responsibility of getting Mumbai Indians to a good score. But Santner once stuck to trigger a middle-order MI collapse before Hardik Pandya flourished at the end. He took 27 off the final two overs and Mumbai Indians posted a challenging total. Pandya remained unbeaten on 23 runs while Santner starred with the ball for Chennai Super Kings returning with two for 13 in his four overs.
