Former India batsman Aakash Chopra on Saturday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for asking people to observe ‘janata curfew’ on Sunday. He, however, insisted that the measure will not be enough to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

PM Modi, on Thursday, addressed the nation on the outbreak. Mr Modi announced a ‘Janata (public) Curfew’ on Sunday (March 22). In an attempt to contain the spread of coronavirus, which has affected over 180 in India, he  requested all the citizens to abide by the ‘Janata Curfew’ on March 22 from 7 am till 9 pm.

In the 30-minutes television address, the Prime Minister started by highlighting the gravity of the situation – that coronavirus disease Covid-19 has affected more people than the two World Wars. He then talked about what to do during the Janata Curfew.

During the Janata Curfew, people are requested to avoid public spaces and stay home for 14 hours in the view of coronavirus outbreak which has affected over 100 countries across the world.

“On March 22, from 7 am to 9 pm, all countrymen have to follow the Janta Curfew,” PM Narendra Modi said. “All citizens must abide by this.”

His speech and initiative has been drawing praise from all over and Aakash Chopra echoed the same sentiments. But the ex-cricketer-turned-commentator also called up for some extreme measures to make sure that the cases do not increase in the country.

“I get the psychological triumph #JuntaCurfew could provide. The feeling of getting together & all too. Well done, PM Sir. But the rapid rise in positive cases in India suggests that it’s not going to be enough…not even a drop in the ocean. Shutting down completely is upon us,” wrote Aakash Chopra.

He further added that India need a roadmap in case of a total shutdown.

“What we need is a roadmap in case of a total shutdown. Not easy in a country where millions rely on daily wages. How are we going to look after them? Get food on their plate…and how prepared are our healthcare facilities. This needs to be communicated loud & clear,” he said.
