MS Dhoni, former Indian captain and a champion wicketkeeper-batsman, was due to make his comeback to competitive cricket but the proliferation of COVID-19 and the subsequent postponement of the cash-rich league had put his comeback on hold.

Dhoni hasn’t played international cricket since the 2019 World Cup. He had gone on an extended sabbatical post-India’s exit from the quadrennial event and since then, speculations have galore regarding his international future.

Indian coach Ravi Shastri had also time and again revealed that the chances of Dhoni making it to the T20 World Cup side hinge on his performances in the 13th edition of the IPL. But with uncertainty around the staging of the tournament this year, no one really knows if and when they’ll see MS Dhoni play again.

Former Australian opener and someone who has played alongside MS Dhoni in the IPL, Matthew Hayden feels that Dhoni is a champion and even though he is on a sabbatical since last July, he’ll eventually knows whether he’s served his time. He also added that Dhoni will eventually make the right decision as he has done throughout his career.

“It’s always very hard as a personal friend of MS to comment on his career. I think every champion, and I consider MS to be a champion, always knows the enough time to put themselves out of the game and not feeling that forced feeling of getting towards the end of the career when the time is ticking,” Matthew Hayden told IANS.

He added: “I am sure he will make the best decision for himself as he has done throughout his whole career.”

There is a lot of uncertainty about the staging of the IPL this year. One of the ideas that has been floated around is to hold the tournament without foreign players, as most of them wouldn’t be able to join their franchises due to border restrictions placed in their respective countries.

But, Hayden thinks that the IPL can exist without the overseas players.

Certainly, the IPL could take exist without foreign players. I think it would be a product that is being compromised naturally because foreign players do add a lot to the IPL. They raise the level of awareness and excitement among fans. Getting nations together has in fact made IPL the fun that it has been,” he said.

He added: “But in conditions like this, it could go on without foreign players and it should go on if all health issues have been uncompromised and the game can proceed in clean stadiums,”
