Pakistan have decided against renewing the contract of their head coach Mickey Arthur. The former South Africa and Australia coach’s contract will expire on August 15.. Along with Arthur, Pakistan have also decided against renewing the contracts of bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, batting coach Grant Flower and trainer Grant Luden.

In the wake of the disastrous World Cup campaign, Pakistan have decided to revamp the national coaching set-up. Pakistan had roped in Arthur in 2016 on a one-year contract.  Under his guidance Pakistan became the number one ranked test and T20 side. He coached Pakistan to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title with a stunning 180 run victory against arch-rivals India in the finals.

The historic win in the Champions Trophy saw Pakistan handing a two-year extension to Arthur. However, things have not really gone well in recent times for Pakistan under Arthur. Earlier this year, Pakistan lost the Test, ODI and T20I series in South Africa. Australia then whitewashed them in a five-match ODI series before England blanked them four nil.

Pakistan’s World Cup campaign also started on a dismal note. They did manage to win their last four games but it was too late by then. However, there were still reports of Pakistan willing to hand an extension to Arthur. With the World T20 upcoming, the top brass of the Pakistan Cricket Board reportedly felt that Arthur should lead the squad.

Arthur, nonetheless, did little to improve his chances of getting an extension. He recently caused a stir by stating that Pakistan should sack Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain. According to a source, Arthur suggested that Shadab Khan should replace Sarfaraz as captain in the limited-over formats while Babar Azam should be given the reins of the Test side.

“Arthur did have some negative things to say about Sarfaraz’s captaincy skills to the members,” the source said.

“I need two more years with the Pakistan team and then I can deliver remarkable results,” Arthur is believed to have told the Committee, headed by PCB Managing Director Wasim Khan.
