Shane Warne, the former champion leg-spinner-turned commentator, has come up with a suggestion, which he feels will bridge the gap between the bat and ball in T20 cricket.

The former Australian leg-spinner, who is currently performing commentary duties in the English International summer, reckoned that increasing the maximum quota of overs bowled by a bowler from four to five will help considerably in addressing the balance of the game in the shortest format.

“What about four bowlers bowl five overs? I just think it’ll make for a better contest between bat and ball. You want your best bowlers bowling as much as you can as T20 is so much in the batsmen’s favor,” Warne said on Sky Sports Cricket during the second T20I between England and Australia.

According to the current rules, each bowler is allowed to bowl a maximum of four overs per innings. There is, however, no restrictions on the number of bowlers used by the fielding captain during the 20 overs.

Giving example of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, Shane Warne reckoned that increasing the maximum quota to five will give the fielding captain a chance to employ his best bowlers for a longer duration, thus keeping batsmen on their toes and also skewing the balance which is heavily tilted in their favor currently.

“When you get a couple of gun bowlers like this [Archer and Wood] you want to give them another over upfront.” Warne said.
