Steve Smith Bags Yet Another Illustrious Record Surpassing Inzamam-ul-Haq

Having amassed 751 runs in six innings of the ongoing Ashes series, Steve Smith has made a remarkable return to Test cricket. His scores in the series so far have been 144, 142, 92, 211, 82 and 80 clearly, the England bowlers have found no way to dismiss him early in the innings. During the course, he added yet another feather to his hat by surpassing Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq on the list.

Steve Smith was once again a class apart in shining armour for the visitors as the former Australian skipper saved Tim Paine-led side’s blushes on Friday in the fifth and final Ashes Test against England at the Oval. The hosts managed to take a 78-run lead after bowling out Smith-inspired side for 225 runs in their first innings.

In fact, there was yet another century to take for Steve Smith. However, once again, Chris Woakes managed to get success against Steve Smith in getting him plumb in front of the wicket. Thus, he was out on 80 runs, which kept him at the top place in the list most 50 plus scores on a trot.

On the second day of the ongoing fifth and final Ashes Test at the Kia Oval, Smith scored 80 runs and in the process registered his 10th consecutive 50+ score against England. From 2001-06, Inzamam had scored nine consecutive 50+ scores against England.

Third in the list comes former West Indies legend Clive Lloyd, who had also scored nine consecutive 50+ scores against England. Then follows South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and Sri Lanka’s great Kumar Sangakkara.

The Aussie batsman is the leading run grosser in the ongoing Ashes and has twice the runs of the second-highest run-getter in the 5-match series. Smith’s 80 run knock in the first innings at the Oval Test is his lowest individual score of the ongoing Ashes series. His patient knock was laced by nine handsome fours and one maximum.

He now stands only 47 runs away from surpassing Bradman’s career Test tally of 6996 runs. Smith has presently amassed 6950 runs from 68 Tests at an average of 64.95, which stands only second to Bradman’s famous 99.94.
