The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reappointed incumbent head coach Ravi Shastri until the T20I World Cup in 2021 hosted by India. The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) headed by Kapil Dev announced the decision after interviewing the six candidates for the role. Along with Shastri, Mike Hesson, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Robin Singh, and Phil Simmons came till the final round before losing to the former India all-rounder.

The CAC members met at the BCCI headquarters earlier today to interview the final applicants before taking the call. While Rajput, Hesson and Robin Singh were present in Mumbai for the interview, Moody and Shastri made their presentations remotely through video conferencing. Simmons, who recently coached Afghanistan at the 2019 World Cup, excused himself from the running citing personal reasons. After going through the applications thoroughly, the CAC decided to reappoint Shastri for another term.

It was expected that the former India cricketer would retain his chair. Skipper Virat Kohli voiced his opinion in support of Ravi Shastri alongside CAC member Anshuman Gaekwad. Shastri has enjoyed good success in his recently concluded tenure winning 11 Tests and losing seven games. India held on to their No.1 ranking on the Test charts but suffered reverses on the tours of South Africa and England. In this period, India also won 44 of their 61 ODIs and made the semifinal of the 2019 World Cup. They also won 25 out of the 36 T20Is during his tenure.

Ravi Shastri’s reappoint garnered mixed reactions from the fans. While many lauded the move, others criticised BCCI for not making changes to the management.

After all…Anshuman Gaekwad was right. Ravi Shastri to continue as India’s Head Coach. And it’s a two year extension. Till the end of World T20 in 2021.

In a world that is so unpredictable, there was but one certainty. No surprise that Ravi Shastri continues as coach of the Indian team.

I don't mind if #RaviShastri continues to be the coach of the team as long as Kohli is happy. Because that's the most important thing. I don't mind even if Kohli wants Rakhi Sawant to be India's next coach. Whatever works for him, works for me.

India must win the ICC tournaments for that matter which they haven't done under Kohli's tenure as India's captain so far.

#RaviShastri remains #TeamIndiaCoach. Whoever the coach is, it doesn’t matter as long as Kohli is fine with the decision. After all, India can afford to see an unhappy Kohli at home, but not at work
