The format of the tournament is a tri-series event. The top performers in the Vijay Hazare trophy are divided into two teams. The third team is the winner of the Vijay Hazare, i.e. Karnataka.

Players look at the tournament as a platform to make a name for them and get into the Indian team in the limited overs format.

Top performers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy try to get into the reckoning for the limited overs side in the 50 overs format via this tournament.

With the Indian team performing well in the 50 overs format players like Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami would be looking forward to making an impression in the tournament and make a comeback in the national team.
