Vernon Philander Opens Up On The Reason Behind His Sudden Retirement

“As a player, you get to the point where you’ve had enough. CSA’s former management only started looking after themselves, the players were the last ones they worried about. Too many things went wrong in the last while, I had to decide what is the best road ahead for me. Then I decided to retire,” Vernon commented.

“I am 35 now, with a decent career behind me, but I would have considered playing longer if not for the chaos in our cricket administration,” claimed Philander.

Although Philander has been great for the Proteas in Tests. However, his limited-overs game has not been the very best. He has picked only 41 wickets in the 30 ODIs that he has played. His T20 record is even poor with four wickets in seven games.

However, his retirement has come as a shock to many as he was on his prime in Test cricket at that time too.

At the time of his retirement, Philander was ranked fifth in the ICC Test All-Rounder Ranking and thus his retirement became all the more suspicious.
