Wriddhiman Saha’s injury woe is worsening with every passing day. The India wicketkeeper was initially sidelined with a thumb injury he had sustained in the Indian Premier League. He subsequently missed the final of the competition. He also didn’t feature in the one-off Test against Afghanistan.

But he was expected to be fit in time for the upcoming Test series against England.  However, the 33-year is now set for a longer spell on the sidelines owing to a shoulder injury. He is set to undergo surgery within 10 days in United Kingdom.

The turn of events has made many believe that the latest injury is the result of a careless rehabilitation. Media reports suggested that Saha’s treatment was botched up in the National Cricket Academy.

“Wriddhiman’s rehabilitation has been a complete goof up. The NCA physio has bungled it big time. Now only a surgery can put him back on track. Once he is done with surgery, he will not touch the bat for at least two months. Then rehab will start,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

“He thought that possibly he could play against England with a good rehab at NCA and take it from there. But at NCA, training under a senior physio aggravated it further,” the official further alleged. “Isn’t it weird that a hairline fracture was taking two months to heal? No one probed the actual reason. Now he requires a major surgery and we can’t put a date on his comeback.”

However, India Today has reported that a careless rehabilitation is not responsible for Saha’s injury. The news outlet claimed that Saha sustained the injury during the IPL when he dived full length,

Recently, Saha tweeted that he was “going through a bad phase” but expects to come back strong.

The latest injury can also jeopardise the tour of Australia towards the end of the year for Saha. He has already suffered several setbacks this year and would be desperate to return to action soon.

After he scored 0 and 8 in the first Test of the year, against South Africa in Cape Town, he suffered a hamstring injury and was sent home. He could not even play in the final of IPL and missed the Test against Afghanistan.
