England white-ball vice-captain Moeen Ali has backed ace all-rounder Ben Stokes to come good when the T20 World Cup 2022 comes around amidst concerns about his form with the bat. Ali also said that his fellow England all-rounder’s worth cannot be measured in runs and wickets alone.

Ben Stokes didn’t play in the recent T20I series against Pakistan in which Moeen Ali captained the side to a 4-3 series win in Lahore and Karachi. He, however, returned to the T20I fold against Australia but has had a couple of scratchy innings after being dismissed for single-figure scores in both T20Is.

Stokes opened the bowling in the second T20 at Canberra and later took the prize wicket of Mitch Marsh, having earlier demonstrated his wide-ranging capabilities with an acrobatic piece of the fielding of the batter. England has won both the first two T20Is and has won the series as well.

“When the big games come, he’ll score runs and that’s what you want from your gun players. Ben offers so much even if he’s not scoring runs, like (when) he opened the bowling (on Wednesday night) and bowled really well and he was brilliant in the field – that effort was amazing.

I don’t care if Ben doesn’t score any runs in the next couple of games because once the World Cup comes, I’m sure he’ll be fine. Even if he doesn’t score runs, he’s a great player to have in your team,” Moeen said after the second T20I in Canberra and was quoted as saying by Cricket 365.

England will play Pakistan in their warmup tie on October 17 ahead of their T20 World Cup 2022 tournament opener against Afghanistan in Perth on October 22.
