With Lahore Qalandars’ campaign in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) done and dusted, their captain Shaheen Afridi, who is also the captain of the Pakistan T20I team, has started preparing for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

The highly-anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29 in the West Indies and the USA. Pakistan are placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA. The onus will be on Shaheen Afridi to end Pakistan’s poor track record in ICC events in recent years. Pakistan has not won a World Cup in any format since winning the 2009 T20 World Cup.

In the last edition of the tournament, they qualified for the final but lost against England. Shaheen Afridi took charge of the T20 team last year and will be aiming to make a big impression in this year’s T20 World Cup. And ahead of the competition, he is doing all he can to build the strongest possible team.

Former Pakistan allrounder Imad Wasim has revealed he received a call from the Pakistan T20I captain as he said he is open to coming out of retirement and playing for the national team again. While Imad did not reveal the details of the call, he said:

“I have always said that if Pakistan needs me, why not? If they don’t need me, there is no issue either.

“Shaheen called me, I told him we would sit and talk after the PSL. There is no big update as of now but Shaheen did call me,” he added.

Imad sensationally retired from international cricket last year at the age of 34. While his last ODI appearance came in 2020, he played his last T20I in April last year. So far, the veteran allrounder has played 55 ODIs and picked up 44 wickets in addition to scoring 986 runs. In 66 T20Is, he picked up 65 wickets and scored 486 runs.

Shaheen Afridi’s poor PSL campaign:

Shaheen Afridi had a poor campaign as a captain in PSL. Having led Lahore Qalandars to titles in the last two PSL seasons, the left-arm pacer could not inspire them to a third title this year. The Qalandars bowed out of the competition after managing just one win in 10 games.
