Legendary India National Cricket Team batter VVS Laxman, who amassed 8781 runs in Test cricket and 2338 runs in ODI cricket, has said that it is very important to have a backup for the India National Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid with too much cricket happening.

National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman has been appointed as the stand-in head coach of the India National Cricket Team for the three-match ODI series against South Africa National Cricket Team in the absence of head coach Rahul Dravid.

Notably, head coach Dravid along with India’s T20 World Cup-bound players departed for Australia for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Speaking ahead of the commencement of play at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday, October 6, stand-in head coach VVS Laxman said:

“It’s worked well so far (as a backup coach), it started from the Ireland series, the one England T20I (1st match) and the Zimbabwe series. Obviously, need to cover up for Rahul (Dravid) given his work commitments and the T20 WC coming up now.”

The ODI games between India and South Africa are scheduled to be played in Lucknow, Ranchi, and Delhi on October 6, October 9 and October 11.

Laxman asserted that the India National Cricket Team are “spoiled for choices” as they have got many brilliantly talented players. He also said that all the players in India’s second-string squad are looking forward to the South Africa ODI series. He said:

“Have a good bunch of cricketers, they are all looking forward to the series, the competition between them is good, we are spoiled for choices considering the amount of talent we have.”

Laxman further said that the BCCI selection committee will have a tough time selecting the squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 considering the big pool of talent available in the country. He elaborated:

“It’ll be difficult for the selectors to get the right team going into the 2023 50-over World Cup. All the youngsters are doing well, they know that they’ll not get too many opportunities once the main players return, but this is a chance to perform well and keep themselves in the hunt when the strongest side is being picked.”
