Former India opener Wasim Jaffer welcomed KL Rahul to the club after the Karnataka opener scored a brilliant century against South Africa in the ongoing Boxing Day Test match in Centurion on Sunday, December 26, 2021.

India decided to bat first after captain Virat Kohli won the toss, despite the green tinge on the surface. India decided to go with five bowlers while playing Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur as all-rounders. The team management also showed faith in Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, while Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer were benched. Mohammed Siraj was preferred over Ishant Sharma in the pace department.

KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal showed all their might and kept the red-ball at bay including a fine bowling spell from Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Wiaan Mulder. The duo added 117 runs before Agarwal fell to Ngidi for a well-made 60 runs which included 8 fours to his name.

Cheteshwar Pujara followed shortly for a golden duck. Virat Kohli hung around for 35 runs before getting out to his patented way of dismissal of edging a wide ball outside off stump. Ajinkya Rahane came in at no.4 under immense pressure and took the attack to the opposition.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul completed his century in 218 balls and at the end of the first day, remained unbeaten on 122 runs in 248 balls with 17 fours and 1 six to his name. Rahane, on the other hand, has 40* in 81 balls with 8 fours to his name,

and the duo added 73* runs together as India finished on day one with 273/3. Lungi Ngidi picked 3/45, while Wiaan Mulder looked dangerous as well.

Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer welcomed KL Rahul to the openers who have a Test century in the South Africa club. Jaffer was the first Indian opener to score a Test century, when he made a ton in the 2007 Cape Town Test match, which, unfortunately, India lost.

Jaffer tweeted: “Welcome to the exclusive club of Indian openers with a Test hundred in SA @klrahul11 ? very well played ?? #SAvIND
