India began the series with a fine win in the first Test. They thrashed the Proteas by 113 runs to register their first-ever win at the Centurion Park. After the Test, South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock announced his retirement from Tests with immediate effect. The hosts won the second Test by seven wickets to level the series.

South Africa won the second Test at the Wanderers Stadium and registered their first Test win over India at the venue. In the third and final Test, South Africa once again emerged victorious by seven wickets to win the series 2-1. After the series ended, Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Test team.

Buoyed by the win in the Test series, South Africa inflicted a whitewash on India in the three-match ODI series. They won the first game by 31 runs thanks to an unbeaten century by Rassie van der Dussen. They won the second game by seven wickets to take an unassailable lead in the series before winning the third and final game by four runs.
