The new selection committee was announced a few days ago with Chetan Sharma being retained by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the BCCI interviewing more than a dozen of candidates last week. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah is still missing from all the squads announced by the BCCI for the New Zealand series.

KL Rahul & Axar Patel were unavailable for New Zealand (IND vs NZ) home series due to family commitments. KL Rahul is set to miss the New Zealand series owing to personal reasons. While Ishan Kishan retains his spot as the second wicket-keeper, it is Andhra batter KS Bharat, who has earned his maiden call-up to India’s ODI squad.
Shardul Thakur, a pace all-rounder, and Shahbaz Ahmed, a spin all-rounder have also been added to the ODI squad which is led by Rohit Sharma. Hardik Pandya, the captain of the T20I squad is Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the ODI squad.

Shahbaz Ahmed

The Bengal bowling all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed made his international debut this year, playing 2 ODI games against Proteas. He also picked 3 wickets in those 2 games, bowling at an economy of 5.06. However, he was wicketless in the 1st ODI against Bangladesh returning with figures of 0/39 in 9 overs.

Shahbaz Ahmed is an underwhelming player picked for IND vs NZ ODI series due to his relatively less experience of featuring in only 3 ODIs. The likes of Krunal Pandya and Ravi Bishnoi may have been picked ahead of him in the IND vs NZ ODIs.

Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar has been injury prone but being an off-spinner is an ideal replacement for off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who may be dropped from ODI World Cup 2023 squad as he had an underwhelming T20 World Cup 2022. Washington Sundar debuted way back in December 2017 but has only featured in 12 ODIs. He may be included in ODI WC 2023 squad for his age of 23 years being on his side and since he’s an off-spinner.

He was in the Indian playing XI in the ODI series against Bangladesh where he scored 67 runs and picked 6 wickets averaging 9.33. He has picked 14 scalps in 12 ODIs at 23.5 and scored 212 runs at 35.33. More experienced spin all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin or even now-fit Ravindra Jadeja could have replaced him in IND vs NZ ODIs.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav has hit 2 ODI fifties but has failed to convert fifties into tons. His highest ODI score is only 64 against West Indies in February 2022. He has amassed 384 runs in 16 ODIs at 32. But he is having an excellent run of form in T20Is, where he has hit 3 tons and 13 fifties and averages 46+ at an outstanding strike rate of 180+. He is currently ranked No. 1 in T20Is by ICC.

The 32-year-old right-handed batter wasn’t in the ODI squad for the Bangladesh series and wasn’t in the playing XI against Sri Lanka in the 1st and 2nd ODI. He returned to the playing XI against Sri Lanka in the 3rd inconsequential ODI.

With the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer present in the ODI team against New Zealand, he may have been replaced in IND vs NZ ODIs with in-form batters (in the domestic circuit) like Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Rajat Patidar, Yash Dhull, Prithvi Shaw or Yashasvi Jaiswal.
