The third One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand was played on Tuesday, January 24, in Indore. Shubman Gill hit 112 (78), his third hundred in four innings, to continue his impressive streak in ODI cricket.

The youngster believes his father would be upset if he did not round the three figures to a huge hundred, though. A few days ago, Shubman’s father made headlines when he expressed his concern that his son wasn’t turning starts into significant scores.

The recent success of Shubman Gill bodes well for the Indian cricket team, who will host the ODI World Cup in a few months. When he struck 112 against New Zealand on Tuesday in Indore, the youthful opener achieved his fourth ODI century in 21 games.

He is now averaging 73.76 in the 50-over format. Gill tied Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s record for the joint-most runs scored (360) in a three-match ODI series after he reached the 112-run milestone in the encounter at Indore. In the Test format, Gill has a ton of material.

Here is what Shubman Gill had to say about his father while speaking to head coach Rahul Dravid in a video released by BCCI: “I think he (dad) won’t be happy with this game. I feel he would have wanted me to carry on and get another big score.”

Shubman Gill expresses gratitude to the team management for their support:

Shubman Gill acknowledged that he wasn’t sure he would play in the one-day internationals against Sri Lanka because left-hander Ishan Kishan had just scored two hundred runs against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

The Indian team management and captain Rohit Sharma were adamant that they wanted to support Gill because of the latter’s dependability, though. This is what the child said: “Before the first ODI against Sri Lanka, I wasn’t sure if I would play as Ishan has scored a double hundred. But the confidence that you (Dravid) and Rohit bhai showed in me gave me a real booster.”

Gill tied Babar Azam’s record for the highest runs scored in a three-match ODI series with 360 runs recorded in three matches against New Zealand.
