Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian batsman, believes that given Ranchi’s turning surface, Men in Blue captain Hardik Pandya could have used all four of part-time spinner Deepak Hooda’s overs.

Due to a masterful all-around performance, New Zealand upset India by 21 runs in the opening T20I on Friday, January 27. After losing the toss and being ordered to bat first, they produced a respectable 176/6. The hosts were subsequently subdued by the Kiwi spinners as Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell respectively captured 2/11 and 2/31.

India’s score in pursuit of a target of 177 was limited to 155/9. After analyzing the Men in Blue’s performance in Ranchi, Jaffer believed that the captain should have used his spin options more effectively. He stated to ESPNcricinfo:

“Given the type of spin the other bowlers were producing, Deepak Hooda definitely should have bowled two more overs for India. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav both bowled quite well” Wasim Jaffer said.

“All the spinners from both sides did exceptionally well.” India may have benefitted from a spinner a little more. The cost of fast bowlers was prohibitive” Wasim Jaffer Added.

“New Zealand did outplay India in every department”: Wasim Jaffer

Assuming there would be dew in the air in the second half, the Men in Blue who won the toss chose to bowl first. There wasn’t much of it, and in the second half, the New Zealand spinners made significant use of the ball’s noticeable spin.

When asked if he believed India had misjudged the circumstances in Ranchi, Jaffer responded that the statement might be made in retrospect.

“Probably, India would have assumed batting conditions might grow easier in the second half with the dew around, but there wasn’t much dew. They (India) would not have expected the ball to spin so fast. Overall, New Zealand outperformed India in every department” Wasim Jaffer said.

In the second over of India’s chase, Bracewell removed Ishan Kishan with a ball that spun quickly. The first ball Santner hit that halted and turned was then mishit by Shubman Gill. After a dismal start, the hosts could not recover and were 15/3 in 3.1 overs.
