Indian skipper Rohit Sharma went past Martin Guptill to become the leading run-scorer in T20Is. India were sent into bat in the first T20I by Sri Lanka, a decision which turned out to be a miscalculation of the conditions. Heading into the game, Guptill (3299) headed the list of highest run-getters followed by Virat Kohli (3296).

Rohit Sharma went past both the players to top the run-getter’s list getting past 3300 runs in the format. He opened along with Ishan Kishan who got to his second T20I fifty after having an indifferent series against West Indies.

Earlier in the day, India made six changes to their playing XI with one of them being a forced one. Ruturaj Gaikwad was made to sit out at the last moment as he faced some pain on his right wrist. Kishan was lucky to retain his place with Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant both rested from the series.

Sanju Samson made a return to the T20I squad and was picked into the XI straightaway. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja is also back in the playing XI after a much-deserved break.

Nothing changes as far as the goals of the team are concerned, need to do the right things as a team, need to keep ticking all the right boxes. Ruturaj was supposed to play but he has a wrist injury and will not play today,” skipper Rohit Sharma said at the toss.

Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka is looking to regather his team post a 4-1 series defeat against Australia. He also spoke about making a few forced changes in their playing XI as well.

We’ll bowl, it’s a very good pitch, we have been bowling well in the last few games, so backing our strengths. Have had a couple of days to recover. We have a couple of injuries – Chandimal and Vandersay are in, they replace Theekshana and Kusal Mendis” said Shanaka.
