Former Indian legendary captain and batter, Sunil Gavaskar, has opened up on team India’s batting order changes in Test cricket. India’s batting order took on a different aspect during the recently finished first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali, with major batters like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane risking expulsion from the Test side.

Rahane’s position was taken by Shreyas Iyer, while Hanuma Vihari walked out to bat at number three. Shubman Gill, on the other hand, was one of the most well-known names on the bench throughout the match.

Due to the absence of KL Rahul for this series, the team management had to choose between Gill and Mayank Agarwal to accompany skipper Rohit Sharma at the top. Agarwal, in particular, had a difficult time in the Test series against South Africa earlier this year. In his last three innings, Gill, on the other hand, has scored 52, 47, and 44 runs. As a result, many speculated that the 22-year-old would be given the opportunity, but the team’s management backed Agarwal.

The 31-year-old was given a chance to play, but he was dismissed for a 49-ball 33. Gavaskar praised India’s decision to select Agarwal over Gill when it came to the batting order. While emphasizing the fact that Gill hasn’t played cricket in a few months, the former Indian captain heaped praise on him.

Mayank performed admirably in home test matches: Sunil Gavaskar remarked

“In the last two months, he (Gill) hasn’t played any sort of cricket.” He didn’t even participate in the Ranji Trophy, so if you want to play for India, you’ll need some sort of preparation. Without a doubt, he possesses the necessary talent. But, in the end, form is important,” Gavaskar stated.

“If you look closely, Mayank Agarwal is always a big scorer in India’s home series.” In India, he bats like a boss, but he doesn’t score runs in other countries. He has at least one huge hundred or a double century in the home series. As a result, he should undoubtedly open,” he added. In the meantime, the batting veteran encouraged Vihari and Iyer to stay in the top order.

“Hanuma Vihari sits at No. 3 on the list. What went wrong with him? In the one opportunity he had in South Africa, he calmed the tail and batted defiantly, adding runs to India’s second innings. As a result, he should be given opportunities,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Team will take on Sri Lanka in the final Test of the two-match series from March 12 in Bangalore. It will be a special occasion as the two teams will lock horns for the first time in a pink-ball Test.
