Indian captain Rohit Sharma was watching from one end as his opening partner, Ishan Kishan, roared back to form with a wonderful knock in the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Kishan and Rohit stitched a 111-run opening partnership for the first wicket that set the platform up for the hosts. Kishan blazed away to 89 off just 56 balls that included as many as ten fours and three sixes.

From thereon, Shreyas Iyer took over and scored a fast-paced 57 to take India to 199/2. Sri Lanka was out of the run chase right from the start and they were eventually restricted to 137/6, losing the first game by 62 runs.

When you play a kind of support that we play, these things [dips in form] are bound to happen. I know the ability Ishan has and it was very very pleasing to watch him bat today.

He constructed the innings after six overs, that was more pleasing. It was not about coming and hitting the ball, it was also about finding the gaps. I love playing in big grounds because that’s where you are tested as a batter. In Kolkata you can just time the ball for a six,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“We will see if we can promote him up the order going forward” – Rohit Sharma on Ravindra Jadeja

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returned to the national team setup after missing out on the last few months due to injury. Although he didn’t have much to do with the bat, he chipped in with a wicket during his 4-over spell.

[On Jadeja] Very happy with him. We want more from him, that’s why we sent him up the order and you would see more of that in the upcoming games. He is in good form, especially Test cricket, and we want to use that in limited-overs. We will see if we can promote him up the order going forward,” Rohit added.

The second game will take place in Dharamshala on Saturday.
