India National Cricket Team pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is all set to miss the upcoming ODI series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a decision not to rush him into action very soon, according to a report published in Cricbuzz.

India recently defeated Sri Lanka by 2-1 in the three-match T20I series and now the teams are set to lock horns in a three-match ODI series. The 50-over assignments will be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.

On Tuesday, January 3, the BCCI announced the inclusion of the 29-year-old Jasprit Bumrah in the ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Notably, Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since September 2022 due to a back injury.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

“Bumrah was out of cricketing action since September 2022 and was also ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to a back injury. The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official media release on Tuesday, January 3.

According to the same Cricbuzz report, Jasprit Bumrah will skip the ODIs against Sri Lanka as the recommendation has been made by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) staff. The decision has been made keeping in the mind the important Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Also, the premier pacer has not reached Guwahati, where the first ODI will be played.

Meanwhile, the sources have said that there is a possibility of Bumrah making his comeback in the 6-match white-ball series against New Zealand, which will begin a few days after the conclusion of the Sri Lanka ODIs.

The ODIs between India and New Zealand will be played on January 18, 21 and 24 in Hyderabad, Raipur and Indore respectively. While, the T20Is will be played on January 27, 29 and February 1 in Ranchi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad respectively.

“Whether a formal communication from the BCCI will be made remains to be seen as the team management is believed to have used its discretion on the advice of the NCA. Sources have said he might feature in the series against New Zealand against whom India will play three ODIs and as many T20I in that order from January 18,” as quoted by Cricbuzz.
