India and West Indies are set to lock horns in the third and final ODI of the series on Friday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rohit Sharma and Co. have clinched the series after winning the second match by 44 runs on Wednesday.

Contrary to the first game, Rohit Sharma lost the toss and was asked to bat first. India didn’t make a great start as they were reduced to 43 for 3 in 12 overs. The likes of Rohit Sharma (5 off 8), Rishabh Pant (18 off 34), and Virat Kohli (18 off 30) failed to impress on a surface that had help for the seamers.

KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav then stitched a valuable 91-run partnership for the fourth wicket to lead the team’s recovery. KL Rahul (49 off 48), unfortunately, got run-out in the 30th over and India lost a bit of momentum after that. Suryakumar Yadav played a valuable knock of 64 runs in 83 balls but India would have posted a 250-run total had he stayed a bit longer. Washington Sundar (24 off 41) and Deepak Hooda (29 off 25) chipped in vital cameos as India managed to score 237 runs in the first innings.

With the ball, Alzarri Joseph (2 for 36) and Odean Smith (2 for 29) lived up to all the expectations. Kemar Roach (1 for 42) too exhibited an improved bowling performance. In response to the score, the West Indies opener made a cautious start as they stayed unbeaten for the first 7 overs. However, the arrival of Prasidh Krishna changed things dramatically. He bowled a sensational spell of fast bowling on Wednesday.

Krishna gave little room to work with and made life difficult for the batters. The Indian seamer accounted for the wickets of Brandon King (18 off 20) and Darren Bravo (1 off 3) to leave West Indies in trouble at 38 for 2. Later, he had Nicholas Pooran caught at slips to turn the game completely in favour of India.

West Indies had lost five wickets for 76 runs after 22 overs. Shamarh Brooks (44 off 64), Akeal Hosein (24 off 52), and Odean Smith (24 off 20) fought hard at the latter half of the innings and none of them could play right till the end and take the team home. In the end, West Indies were bundled out for 193 runs in the second innings, thereby falling 44 runs short of the target.

Prasidh Krishna was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4 for 12 in 9 overs, while Shardul Thakur (2 for 41) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1 for 45) also bowled pretty well. Heading into the final match of the series, India will be keen to register a series whitewash, while West Indies would look to salvage some pride.

The pitch here at Narendra Modi Stadium offers a good amount of assistance for the fast bowlers. There is some extra bounce on the surface and the fast bowlers have made great use of that. The ones who hit the deck hard tend to pick more wickets here.

Having said that, the ball is gripping and turning as well. Spinners need to bowl slowly in the air to extra spin from the surface.

The dimensions of the ground are quite big, so you expect the batsmen to take a lot of singles and doubles. Both should look to the ball first, upon winning the toss as due is likely to come into the picture in the second innings.
