Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017/18: Umesh Yadav Named in Faiz Fazal-Led Vidarbha

Umesh Yadav has been included in the Vidarbha side for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. The right-arm pacer has returned from South Africa after the conclusion of Test series between India and South Africa.

Though he did not play even a single Test and spent his time on the sidelines, he was not included in the ODI team for the series and does not play T20I cricket. Hence, Yadav was available for the domestic tournament, and the selectors decided to gain his services.

It is also an opportunity for Umesh to do well in the tournament and press his case for selection in the ODI side.

Faiz Fazal, who led Vidarbha to Ranji Trophy victory last month, will continue to the team in the domestic season with likes of Karn Sharma, Ganesh Satish, Akshay Wakhare, Apoorv Wankhede on the side. Rajneesh Gurbaani, who drew limelight in the Ranji Trophy final after taking a hat-trick, has also been named in the squad.

Surprisingly, the name of Aditya Thakare is absent from the list. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy final and scalped two wickets in the game. He was called to New Zealand to join the India U-19 team after an injury to Ishan Porel. Though Porel got fit and Thakare didn’t play any contest.

Like other India U19 players, he was available for his side after a couple of games, but selectors didn’t name him in the side. Akshay Karnewar, the ambidextrous bowler, has made his comeback to the side for the limited-overs tournament. He went unsold in the IPL auction, as his name was not called out during the two-day process.

Vidarbha are placed in Group D, and will face Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad, Services, Chhattisgarh and Saurashtra in the league phase of the tournament.
