Vidarbha’s superstar and bowling hero Rajneesh Gurbani has overall become the second bowler in the history of premium first-class competition Ranji Trophy – to seal the hat-trick on day two of the final on Saturday (December 30) morning, with the prized scalp of Delhi’s centurion Dhruv Shorey at Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi was restricted at 295 in 102.1 overs, as Gurbani went onto pick first two wickets on the final two deliveries of 101st over of Delhi’s innings when the visitors’ score was 290 before the bowler jumped in joy by taking the hat-trick wicket on the very first ball of 103rd over.

Interestingly, after his rollicking performance with the red-ball, Gurbani has become the second bowler to register the hat-trick in Ranji after B Kalyanasundaram.

In 1972-73, the Tamil Nadu-based fast bowler Kalyanasundaram registered the first-ever hat-trick in the Ranji final when he recorded a hat-trick against the then Bombay, however, which could save the team from the defeat.

Moreover, the 70-year-old Kalyanasundaram, who further became the umpire and then the match referee during his career between 1966 and 1978 featured in 51 first-class fixtures which saw him claiming 147 wickets at an average of 20.03.

Gurbani achieved the milestone when he bowled Vikas Mishra, who scored just seven off 82 balls, before dislodging the bails to sent back Navdeep Saini on a duck, as he registered his hat-trick by cleaning up resilient Shorey (145 off 294)

The 24-year-old Nagpur-based opener Gurbani is playing his 10th first-class fixture after making his debut against Jharkhand at Wayanad way back in October 2016.

Give right-arm medium pacer Gurbani a ball, and he will dictate the terms on the 22-yard surface with his guile and commitment to eke out wickets of the opposition from time-to-time.

The prominent youngster in the form of Gurbani has played an integral role in the ongoing edition of the Ranji Trophy competition, and he went on to grab another five-wicket haul and has been subsequently the buoyant force behind the success of Faiz Fazal-led Vidarbha.

It’s pertinent to mention, the right-arm bowler Gurbani has bagged 36 wickets in 12 innings so far in the ongoing elite-level domestic competition.

While rolling the golden arm, Gurbani was the protagonist with the ball in the first innings of the ongoing final which saw his figures of six for 59 in 24 overs. He simultaneously sent down eight maiden overs.

However, Gurbani bagged the hat-trick in his 23rd over which saw his last four wickets came when the ball smashed onto the stumps including the wicket of the last-man-to-go Kulwant Khejroliya.

Earlier, Delhi resumed their first innings with the overnight score of 271 which further saw Vidarbha openers in the form of Fazal and Sanjay Ramaswamy had given a solid start in their maiden final.
