3. Captainship Woes

Rohit Sharma was the skipper of India in T20 World Cup this year and after the team’s poor performance in the semi-final clash against England, his T20 captainship has come under criticism. Selectors are also planning to name Hardik Pandya as the new skipper in the shortest format.

This way, India will have split captaincy. Hence currently, India has a lot of issues in the matter of leadership in the shortest format. If Hardik Pandya is picked as the new T20I skipper, he will have less than 2 years to make develop himself as a powerful leader. Hence, with uncertainty over a powerful skipper in the T20I format, India might have a hard time during 2024 T20 World Cup.

2. Strong Set Of Openers

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were the openers for the team in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 this year. However, they both failed to come up with a dashing performance for the team. While KL Rahul failed to bat at a good strike rate, Rohit Sharma struggled to score runs.

Both of them also struggled in last year’s T20 WC tournament and hence, selectors might not pick them as the opening pair in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The team will need a new set of openers. India has some powerful pacers in the form of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the squad currently. However, they cannot be trusted in the shortest format. Due to workload in Tests and ODIs, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are often absent in many T20I series.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has failed to perform in ICC tournaments multiple times. Other pacers like Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik, Harshal Patel, and Deepak Chahar among others are not too experienced in T20Is.

Since the 2024 T20I World Cup will take place in West Indies and the US, pacers will play a strong role in the tournament. Since India lacks powerful and experienced pacers in the T20I team, it might affect their strength to lift the title in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
