3 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma And Shikhar Dhawan Should Quit As India’s Opening Pair Ahead Of ICC World Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who first opened for India during ICC Champions Trophy 2013, are still the primary opening pair in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are still open for India in the ODI series when both of them are available in the squad. However, their performance is not as wonderful as it was a few years back.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have also failed to showcase their dominance as openers. Hence, they can be dropped as the opening pair in ODIs and some others can take their spots. Here we talk about 3 reasons why Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan should quit as India’s opening pair ahead of ICC World Cup 2023.

3 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma And Shikhar Dhawan Should Quit As India’s Opening Pair Ahead Of ICC World Cup 2023

3. Aged Players

While Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are still powerful batsmen for India, they are aged players and do not have many years left in their careers. Rohit Sharma will turn 36 years old next year while Shikhar Dhawan will turn 38 years old next year.

Although age doesn’t decide a player’s strength, it definitely has to do with the fitness of a player. Hence, they might not be as successful in ICC World Cup 2023 as they had been in the previous ODI World Cup tournament.

2. Diminishing Performance as Opening Pair

At one time, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were a powerful set of openers for India. However, with time, their pair faded away at least in T20I and Tests. Players like Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan showed a better performance than Shikhar Dhawan in Tests and T20Is and took his place in the team.

Later, Dhawan was only left with the spot in ODIs. Both Sharma and Dhawan only play a few ODI games together as the former is rested in some series. Their dominance as openers has failed currently and there are very few games when both of them set up a big partnership.

Players like KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are some young openers that the Indian team can invest in. These players have shown good performance in white-ball formats and can be powerful opening options for the team.

Picking these players will also help India to set up a powerful top order in the future as these players are young and have a lot of years left in their careers. Hence, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan can be dropped as ODI openers and others can be given opportunities.
