Australian players are eager to compete in the County Championship as a warm-up for the Ashes 2023, which will begin on June 16 in England. Steve Smith has signed a three-match deal with Sussex, and other cricketers are keen to follow him for a short-term County stint as a pre-Ashes spell.

Playing County cricket ahead of the crucial five-match Test series will give Australian cricketers time to practice and acclimatise to the English environment. According to a report by The Mirror, Mitchell Starc, who opted not to play in the Indian Premier League once again, is also considering a county stint as he has a window after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Along with Mitchell Starc, counties have directly approached an uncapped pacer Lance Morris, who could make his Test debut against India next month. Veteran opener Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw, and Travis Head, among Australia’s stars without IPL contracts, could also sign with the counties. All three also have considerable experience with a number of counties in the past.

The No. 1 ranked Test batter, Marnus Labuschagne, will return to Glamorgan for his fourth stint after signing a new two-year contract, and he will be joined by Australian bowler Michael Neser. Opener Marcus Harris, who played in the most recent Ashes series in England, is also signed with Gloucestershire for another year.

I Am Excited About Joining Sussex For A Few Games – Steve Smith

Australia vice-captain Steve Smith will play three County Championship games for Sussex, ahead of this summer’s Ashes. Smith is set to play three County Championship matches against Worcestershire, Leicestershire, and Glamorgan, allowing one of Australia’s key players extra preparation in England before the Ashes.

Commenting on his deal with Sussex, Steve Smith said, “I am excited about joining Sussex for a few games in May and hopefully making a contribution to a successful season. I am particularly looking forward to working with the younger players in the squad and hoping I can provide some guidance to them.”

The batsman scored 774 runs in seven innings over the course of his side’s 2-2 series draw with England last year. Smith could benefit from the county’s experience in English conditions as Australia look to win a series in England for the first time in 22 years.
