Indian pacer Mohammed Shami had a tough 2018 being charged with various allegations by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan. It was in 2018 that Shami’s career saw a lot of ups and downs and due to a series of harsh allegations against him, the cricketer even had suicidal thoughts by his own admission.

Back in 2018, his estranged wife Hasin Jahan had leveled various allegations, including match-fixing, resulting in BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) investigating the matter. Jahan claimed that the pacer had received money from a Pakistani woman. This led the Supreme Court to form a Committee of Administrators (CoA) and asked BCCI to investigate the matter.

Shami’s estranged wife also charged allegations of domestic violence and allegations against him which led to BCCI upholding the Indian pacer’s contract. Latter Shami was cleared of all the charges and he made a comeback on the Indian side.

In Cricbuzz’s brand new series “Rise Of New India”, Ishant Sharma, Shami’s long-time friend, and teammate with the Indian national team spoke about the tough times he faced and everything else that happened during the investigation.

200 Percent Sure That He Can’t Do Match Fixing: Ishant Sharma On Mohammed Shami

Sharma revealed that he told the Neeraj Kumar-led unit that he was “200 percent” sure Shami was not involved in such matters, although he did not comment about his personal life.

“I had a word with him and he did share of lot on the topic. Whatever had happened, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had approached us all, and they had asked us whether Shami could do a match-fixing or not. Just like policemen lodge a complaint…I was asked everything and all was written down. I had told them, ‘I don’t know his personal things but I’m 200 percent sure he can’t do that because I know him that well.” When he heard I said those words, he realised that what I think of him and our bond became stronger,” he said.

After being declared not guilty by the Supreme Court and the Anti Corruption unit, the Indian pacer made a comeback and was a part of India’s 2019 World Cup squad as well and took a hat-trick against Afghanistan. He picked up 14 wickets in just four games and played a crucial role in India reaching the semifinal of the tournament.
