Following the squad’s forthcoming ODI series versus New Zealand, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who was recently named temporary chief selector of the national team, may take up the position permanently.

Mohammad Wasim and company were replaced by the selection committee headed by Shahid Afridi, which also includes Abdul Razzaq, Iftikhar Rao, and Haroon Rasheed. Ramiz Raja had been fired as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in December 2022.

Strong Possibility That Shahid Afridi Will Be Persuaded To Continue

Shahid Afridi who had only agreed to take on the position for the home series versus New Zealand is now reconsidering his decision. Later this month, Mickey Arthur will decide whether or not to keep Shahid Afridi as Pakistan’s head selector.

Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman are back in the lineup for the three ODIs starting on January 9, which he just confirmed. A source stated to the Times Of India:

“Shahid has had talks with PCB Chairman Najam Sethi who had initially convinced him to work as interim chief selector but now discussions have taken place on the possibility of the former captain continuing in the role given that this year Pakistan has two major events — the 50-overs Asia Cup and the World Cup in India.

“Strong possibility that Shahid will be persuaded to continue and chalk out a schedule where he can also give time to his foundation work.”

According to the report, interim selection committee members’ selections for the recently finished Test series against New Zealand were acceptable to new PCB chairman Najam Sethi. The series finished with a score of 0-0, finishing Pakistan’s red-ball home season without a victory despite the two teams having played several close matches.

Mickey Arthur Asks For Some Time To Consider His Options And Positions

Saqlain Mushtaq’s tenure as the team’s head coach would likely come to an end after the completion of the ODI series versus New Zealand. After Misbah-ul-Haq’s contentious exit before the T20 World Cup 2021, the former spinner took charge of the team.

Mickey Arthur, the current coach of Derbyshire, is preferred by Najam Sethi, according to reports. The two had previously collaborated while the PCB chairman was in office. Under the South African, Pakistan enjoyed a successful run, winning the 2017 Champions Trophy and holding the No. 1 spot in a number of different forms. Added the source:

“Arthur, who currently has a long contract with Derbyshire county, has asked for some time to consider his options and position and has said he will get back later this month with a solid answer.”

With the Sri Lankan squad, Arthur had his final international managing assignment, which was completed in November 2021.
