On Thursday, Australia beat South Africa in the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. South Africa had a terrific tournament finishing second in the points table with just two defeats to their name in nine games. However, they succumbed to the mighty Aussies in the semi-final and bowed out of the tournament. The semi-final between South Africa and Australia marked the end of Quinton de Kock’s ODI career.

Quinton de Kock had already announced that he will be retiring after South Africa’s campaign ends in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He had a terrific run in the tournament, scoring 594 runs in 10 innings at an average of 59.40 with four centuries to his name. Quinton has been lauded by former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting for having a stellar career in the ODIs. He failed to score runs in the semi-final departing at a meagre score of three.

“The way he has played in this World Cup, I’m sure every cricket fan and every South African cricket fan would love to see him go out and play in one more 50 over World Cup. What a tournament he has had to finish on four hundreds in the tournament I think it is important for all of us out there just not to remember Quinton de Kock by the way he played his last game today,” said Ponting

Ricky Ponting further adds how he saw Quinton de Kock being more animated in the match against Australia. He said, “He has been outstanding throughout this tournament. I actually saw him more animated today than I’ve seen him ever before as well as giving the players an address when they took their first wicket which really showed to me today how much it meant to him to be hopefully part of a successful South African team.”

Ponting concluded by giving his best wishes to Quinton de Kock and bidding him farewell for a terrific ODI career. Quinton de Kock represented South Africa in 155 ODIs scoring 6770 runs at an average of 45.74. He registered 21 centuries and 30 half-centuries in this format of the game.

“So he can bow out of One-day international cricket a very very proud man of what he’s done I’m sure his family will be proud of him but his overall record was outstanding and you could see how much it meant to him,” Ponting concluded.

Quinton de Kock will now be focusing on the T20 format of the game both internationally and franchise-based. He has made himself available for the 2023 edition of the Big Bash League where he represents Melbourne Renegades.
