Australia, who were defending the World T20 title at home, were knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup and failed to progress to the knockout stages.

In the marquee event, David Warner scored 44 runs in four games, averaging 11. The left-handed batter is expected to retire from the longer format within the next year in order to focus on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India and the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States in 2024.

It Could Be My Last 12 Months In Test Cricket – David Warner

Cricket Australia have a busy red ball schedule next year, so Warner’s decision comes as no surprise, especially after Matthew Hayden has already called for a regeneration. The 36-year-old gave a huge update on his future, hinting that next year’s Ashes series could be his last appearance in the longer version of the game.

“Test cricket will probably be the first one to fall off. Because that’s how it will pan out. The T20 World Cup is in 2024, (one-day) World Cup next year,” Warner said on Triple M’s Deadset Legends.

“Potentially it could be my last 12 months in Test cricket. But I love the white-ball game; it’s amazing.T20 cricket – I love the game. I will be looking to get to 2024. For all those people saying I am past it and a lot of those old people are past it, look out. Be careful what you wish for,” Warner added.

England and New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals from Australia’s group, where they faced India and Pakistan, respectively. England won the tournament at the MCG, beating Pakistan in the finals to register their second T20 World Cup title.

Australia will host a two-match Test series against the West Indies beginning on November 30. The Kangaroos will then host South Africa in a three-match Test and one-day international series.
