Former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has named the best batsman in the world currently. Similar to several other former and present cricketers, the Guyanese southpaw labelled Virat Kohli as a complete batsman in the current era. The 45-year old has taken part in the Road Safety World Series in which he represented the West Indies Legends team, captained by Brian Lara. They lost to India Legends in the opening match on Saturday.

Chanderpaul has been one of the most prolific run-scorers of all time. Not many realize that the left-handed batsman made his debut in 1994 and went on to play for almost a decade. Having quit international cricket two years ago, Chanderpaul mustered 11867 runs in 164 Tests at a healthy average of 51.87. He also featured in 268 ODIs for the Caribbeans, scoring 8778 runs at 41.41.

Speaking to Sportstar in an interview, the Guyanese lavished praises on the Indian captain by saying that he puts the hard yards day in and day out, working on all aspects of the game. He further said that it’s not easy to stay on the top of your game for so long and Kohli’s efforts have shown the way how to remain there.

“Obviously, it’s Virat Kohli. He has been working on all the aspects of his game and the results are showing. He is working hard on his fitness, he works on his skills. You see him putting in the hard work and he is one of those guys, who always wants to do well. He’s proven it, day in and day out. You have to give credit to him for that. It’s not easy to stay at the top of your game for so long. You got to put in your work and the results are showing.”

When asked about his team’s chances of defending their crown in Australia later this year, the 45-year old remarked that in T20 it depends upon how anybody performs on a particular day. At the same time, he admitted that his countrymen have one of the best T20 outifts but they cannot take any opposition lightly.

“Well, West Indies have always had players for the shorter format. Yet again, it all depends on how well you perform on that day, because in T20 format, anybody could win on that day. We always have a lot of match winners, that’s the good thing about us. With the power hitters, good bowlers — they play a major part in the shorter format. So, we still have one of the best T20 squads around. But we still have to go out and play well to win matches. Don’t take anyone lightly, play as hard as we can, and we will win.” he said in this regard.
