Watch: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Signal Rishabh Pant To Complain Umpires About Bad Light

On Day 4 of the Lord’s Test, India captain Virat Kohli, opener Rohit Sharma and other members were left irritated by the fact that the umpires allowed the play to continue despite bad light at the ground. Bad light in cricket means light not good enough for batting.

An over before the play was eventually called off, the umpires had already acknowledged that the light had dimmed, that in spite of the floodlights being turned on, when they had told England captain Joe Root that he cannot bowl a fast bowler and had to continue with the spinners, Moeen Ali and Root himself.

Moeen Ali, who had already accounted for the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja, bowled the 82nd over. During that, Kohli and Rohit Sharma were caught gesturing to the two batsmen in middle, Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma, asking them to complain to the umpires about the bad light.

Virat Kohli, in particular, was at his expressive self, being flustered about the proceedings. Fortunately, for India, Pant and Ishant negotiated that over before the umpires eventually had to call the day off.

India fight hard, England bowlers make inroads to set up a tantalising final day

181 runs were scored and 6 wickets fell on Day 4 as both the teams remain in contention to take a lead in the series on the fifth and final day of the game. The cat and mouse game went on for the entire day as no one team had their noses ahead for long.

The hosts made two early breakthroughs with the pace of Mark Wood while India still had only 27 on the board – effectively that was 0/2 as England had taken a 27-run lead in the first innings. The big blow for the visitors came in the form of Kohli’s wicket before Lunch with the team score still 55.

From there, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, two batsmen who have struggled for rune recently, took over in a 100-run partnership before both fell in the third session; so did Ravindra Jadeja before the closing of play. India have 181 on the board, but it is the lead of 154 so far which will be in focus when they come to bat in on Monday.
