Wasim Jaffer To Lead Vidarbha In Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20

Senior batsman Wasim Jaffer will be leading Vidarbha in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20, it was announced on Saturday. The news also confirms that Jaffer has also been re-signed by Vidarbha and will continue to play them in the Ranji Trophy as well.

The 41-year-old was recently appointed as the batting coach of Bangladesh where he was to work with teams across age groups. He was also the batting consultant of Bangladesh in the series against Sri Lanka. Later, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed a new coaching staff headed by Russell Domingo.

Vidarbha squad also includes India pacer Umesh Yadav. Since the India squad for South Africa Tests had to be trimmed, Umesh was dropped from the side. Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are three pacers in the Test squad. Umesh is now expected to make his Test comeback when the selectors rest any of the regular pacers or when the team travels outside Asia next year.

Ganesh Satish, Akshay Wakhare and Aditya Sarvate are other experienced players in the squad. Both Wakhare and Sarvate were also in the Duleep Trophy squads. Wakhare’s fifer in the final also saw him get the backing of Harbajan Singh to get a Test call-up.

In the pace department, Umesh will be assisted by Shrikant Wagh.

The two-time Ranji Trophy champions will aim to do well in white-ball cricket as well – they had won Ranji Trophy in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Vidarbha kick off their campaign against last year’s runner-up Delhi on September 24. They will next play Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Baroda, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh in their next league stage matches. Vidarbha will play all their league stage games in Vadodara.
