Windies have announced their 13-man squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. It includes some new names from the previous squad.

Board recalled southpaw and opener Devon Smith in the national squad after a span of three years. Barring Smith, another surprise inclusion in the team is Jahmar Hamilton. It is his maiden national call-up.

Hamilton has impressed the national selectors with his performances for the Windies A squad against the England Lions.

Meanwhile, it should be noted Hamilton has been playing First-class cricket since 2008. On the other hand, Smith has been a veteran cricketer and made his national debut way back in 2003 as a 21-year-old youngster.

The southpaw has been riding on his Professional Cricket League Regional Four-day Tournament performances where he has accumulated 1,095 runs at a staggering average of 84.23.

The Chairman of Selectors of Windies Cricket Board (WICB) Courtney Browne said that they tried to retain the core of the Test team. They want to remain competitive even a relatively tough Test series against the Kiwis.

“We have retained the core of the Test team as they remain competitive even after a tough series in New Zealand. Devon Smith had an outstanding year and players who excel to that degree should be recognised,” Browne said in a WICB’s release.

Meanwhile, Jason Holder will continue to lead the Windies squad. The first of the three-match series against the Islanders will be played from 6th June at Trinidad.

“We are trying to improve our top order batting performances. Jahmar Hamilton comes into the squad after consecutive strong performances over the last three years and showed even better quality in the ‘A’ team series against the England Lions. We wish the team every success,” Browne maintained.
